Ho Chi Minh City’s agriculture sector is undergoing a revolution with the growth of urban agriculture models driven by technology and biotechnology. Ho Chi Minh City’s agriculture sector has seen a substantial recovery following the fourth Covid-19 outbreak, with a 3.74% increase in the agricultural, forestry, and fishery Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) estimated at VND8.39 trillion ($357.6 million) in 2022. In addition, the production value of the agricultural sector in 2022 is estimated at VND19 trillion ($809.9 million), with a 3.78% increase from 2021. This growth is a positive sign for the city’s economy, as the ongoing pandemic has significantly impacted it.
The city is seeing the emergence of new urban agriculture models driven by applying advanced technology. These models provide farmers with a more efficient and sustainable means of production while ensuring a higher quality of crops. As a result, this leads to impressive economic performance and contributes to the overall growth of the agriculture sector.
Currently, the city focuses on staple products and targets a production value of VND640-660 million ($27,280-28.132) per hectare. The objective is to provide local consumers with affordable and accessible food and help boost the city’s economy. In addition, this focus on staple products will also help the city to increase self-sufficiency, reducing its reliance on imported food and increasing its food security.
The city is also implementing biotechnology to develop high-quality, high-yielding plant varieties and breeds. The plan will help to increase crop yields and improve the overall quality of the products being produced. In addition, this will help the city to become a center for seedlings and breeds in the region, providing farmers with access to the latest technology and innovations in agriculture.
