Agronomic advisor Norm, driven by AI, has been introduced by Farmers Business Network (FBN) to offer farmers a wide range of agronomic knowledge. In addition to FBN’s unique data streams, Norm uses publicly accessible data such as meteorological insights, soil monitoring, application rates, product labeling, current events, academic research, and grower opinion. Built on OpenAI’s Chatbot GPT-3.5, Norm enables farmers to ask a wide range of questions on agronomy, farm management, animal health, and product usage to aid in their decision-making.
With Norm, farmers can get advice on anything from crop rotation to input selection, with responses that are specifically customized to their unique situation. For example, the AI-powered adviser may recommend the best seed based on location, soil type, climate, and market demand. It can also assist in finding generic alternatives, application rates, pest and disease targets, tank mix and nozzle options, and pest and disease targets. Additionally, Norm may offer advice on livestock and animal health, assisting farmers in understanding ailments and medications, particularly for beef cattle.
Each season, farmers must make hundreds of decisions on various issues, including soil chemistry, plant genetics and diseases, chemical applications, equipment upkeep, and commodity price hedging, according to Kit Barron, Head of Data Science at Farmers Business Network. Being an authority in any of those fields is challenging. Thus, FBN anticipates a time when Norm can advise its members on various subjects. In addition, the AI-powered adviser should aid in boosting farmer profitability and return on investment.
Dr. Norman Borlaug, an agricultural legend and agronomist regarded as the Father of the Green Revolution, is honored by having his name given to Norm. Dr. Borlaug received the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to agronomy. Norm was developed to support farmers in making decisions using AI-powered suggestions and data-driven insights.
