CryoBio Advances Frost Protection Technology with New Funding

CryoBio has raised $1.3 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The round included participation from Ag Ventures Alliance, NY Ventures, Launch NY, and FuzeHub, as well as impact-focused angel investors including Klessig Trust and Jade Cove Partners.

Founded in 2025 as a spin-out from Marble, CryoBio is developing a frost protection solution designed to address increasing crop losses caused by late-spring frosts. Frost events are reported to result in up to $30 billion in annual agricultural damage across North America and Europe.

Traditional frost mitigation methods—such as candles in vineyards or the use of helicopters to circulate warm air—remain labor-intensive and costly.

Bio-Inspired Approach to Frost Protection

CryoBio’s technology draws on naturally occurring antifreeze molecules found in certain animals capable of surviving extremely low temperatures. The company formulates these molecules into a sprayable, food-safe product intended to protect crops from frost damage.

According to the company, controlled trials have shown that treated plants can withstand freezing conditions for up to ten times longer than untreated plants. The company states that the approach may offer a lower-cost alternative to conventional frost protection methods.

The leadership team includes Murli Manohar, PhD (CEO), Luis Marquez (CTO), and Abe Pressman, PhD (Founding Scientist), with experience in agro-biotech product development.

CryoBio Plans On-Farm Trials in the United States

The newly raised capital will support CryoBio’s progression from laboratory validation to on-farm field trials. Initial trials are expected to focus on apple and grape crops in the mid-Atlantic United States.

CryoBio is also expanding its operations in New York as it advances development and prepares for broader agricultural testing.
