FuturaGene Secures Regulatory Clearance for Gene-Edited Eucalyptus
FuturaGene, the biotechnology subsidiary of Suzano, has received formal approval from Brazil’s National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio) for a new gene-edited eucalyptus variety. CTNBio confirmed that the variety meets the exemption criteria outlined under Normative Resolution No. 16 (RN 16).
The new variety was developed using CRISPR-Cas9, a gene-editing technique categorized as a New Breeding Technique (NBT). According to the company, the process does not introduce genetic material from other species, and the resulting modification is comparable to variations that may occur naturally or through conventional breeding.
Focus on Wood Quality and Industrial Efficiency
The gene edit is designed to optimize lignin composition within the wood. By modifying lignin characteristics, the development aims to support more efficient industrial processing by reducing chemical inputs and energy consumption during pulping operations.
