Key Takeaways

  • Honda is purchasing soil carbon removal credits through Carbon by Indigo, supporting the removal of 1,800 metric tons of CO₂.
  • The initiative helps farmers adopt regenerative agriculture practices that improve soil health and field resilience.
  • Approximately 150 farmers near Honda operations benefit, representing 214,000 acres using regenerative methods.
  • Carbon credits are independently verified by Aster Global and issued by the Climate Action Reserve.
  • The partnership aligns with Honda’s broader decarbonization strategy across products and operations.

Honda Expands Commitment to Regenerative Agriculture Through Carbon by Indigo

Honda has joined Carbon by Indigo, a leading soil carbon program supporting U.S. farmers in adopting regenerative agriculture practices that enhance soil health and deliver measurable climate benefits. As part of this initiative, the company is purchasing soil carbon removal credits equivalent to 1,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

The investment supports farmers implementing practices such as cover cropping, reduced tillage, diversified rotations, and optimized nitrogen use—all methods shown to improve soil structure, reduce erosion, and increase long-term field productivity. These efforts generate verified carbon credits by storing more carbon in agricultural soils.

Farmers participating in the Carbon by Indigo program receive technical guidance tailored to their crop systems and local field conditions. The program’s credits are verified by Aster Global Environmental Solutions and issued by the Climate Action Reserve.

Honda Initiative Delivers Local Impact and Supports Climate Resilience

Through its participation, Honda is supporting approximately 150 farmers across states where it has operational facilities, including Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. Collectively, these farmers manage more than 214,000 acres of cropland where regenerative practices are being implemented.

On average, the practices deployed under this project conserved an estimated 69,000 gallons of water per metric ton of carbon removed, emphasizing the dual benefits of improved soil function and climate adaptation.

“For over 40 years, Honda has supported farmers near our Ohio operations through conservation programs,” said Mahjabeen Qadir, sustainability strategy lead at Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC. “Now, Honda is building on that history by supporting regenerative agriculture practices that help farmers manage climate challenges and maintain healthy farmland for future generations.”

Dean Banks, CEO of Indigo Ag, added: “The Carbon by Indigo program builds prosperity from the ground up, with tangible benefits for local communities and their environment.”

Advancing Broader Decarbonization Strategy

The collaboration is part of a wider sustainability effort by Honda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use high-quality offsets only for residual emissions that cannot yet be eliminated. Current initiatives include:

  • Transitioning to battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles
  • Tree-planting programs supporting biodiversity
  • Home energy and vehicle energy management technologies
  • Increasing energy efficiency and low-carbon energy use in manufacturing
  • Expanding hydrogen fuel cell solutions for commercial and industrial applications

Through its work with Carbon by Indigo, Honda aims to support climate-smart farming while contributing to healthier ecosystems and more resilient rural communities.
