Bloemteknik Advances Autonomous Greenhouse Lighting
Bloemteknik Limited, a Cardiff-based provider of precision LED lighting systems for commercial greenhouses and vertical farms, has secured an Innovate UK-supported research and development project valued at more than £707,000. The funding was awarded through the Investor Partnership Programme and will support further development of Bloem’s autonomous lighting platform, GreenFingers.
Founded in 2023 by two former senior leaders from GE, Bloemteknik has deployed over 25,000 LED fixtures across multiple international markets. The company’s modular lighting systems are designed to meet crop-specific and environment-specific requirements, aiming to improve operational efficiency and crop performance.
Bloemteknik's GreenFingers Platform Focuses on Autonomous Optimization
The Innovate UK funding will advance GreenFingers, Bloem’s self-optimizing lighting control system. The platform continuously analyzes canopy-level plant data and environmental conditions to generate productivity and energy-efficiency insights.
These insights are applied automatically through real-time LED adjustments, helping maintain consistent daily light integral (DLI) levels and reduce energy waste without requiring manual intervention.
James Fleet, CEO of Bloemteknik, said: “The Innovate UK funding is a major milestone for Bloem and a strong validation of the technology we’re building. It allows us to push GreenFingers further—deepening the intelligence of the platform and delivering even greater value to growers.”
Combined Funding Supports Commercial Expansion
The Innovate UK award follows a £2.5 million equity investment from Foresight Group, made through the British Business Bank’s Investment Fund for Wales and Foresight’s Growth VCTs. The Investment Fund for Wales was launched in November 2023 to expand access to early-stage finance for SMEs across Wales.
Bloemteknik stated that the combined funding will accelerate product development, expand validation programs, and support GreenFingers’ progression toward commercial readiness. The company also plans to strengthen operational capacity and pursue expansion into additional international markets.
