AAFCO Launches Agentic AI Virtual Assistant for Regulatory Compliance

AAFCO has launched the "AAFCO Virtual Assistant," an Agentic AI system built on the SWARM Engineering platform.

Key Takeaways

  • Technological Modernization: AAFCO has launched the “AAFCO Virtual Assistant,” an Agentic AI system built on the SWARM Engineering platform.
  • Governed Intelligence: The tool uses a controlled regulatory corpus, drawing exclusively from AAFCO-verified sources such as the Official Publication.
  • Industry Accessibility: The assistant is available to subscribers of the AAFCO Digital Publication Package, providing instant guidance on labeling and ingredient definitions.
  • Operational Efficiency: The AI is designed to streamline the navigation of complex safety standards for regulators, manufacturers, and stakeholders.
  • Future Compliance Tools: AAFCO has issued an RFP for a secondary AI agent specifically designed to evaluate animal feed label compliance with federal regulations.

AAFCO Integrates AI into Feed Regulation Framework

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has announced the official launch of the AAFCO Virtual Assistant. Developed in collaboration with SWARM Engineering, the AI system is designed to modernize how the animal food industry accesses regulatory information. By embedding AI within the organization’s established framework, the tool allows users to query ingredient definitions and safety standards with increased speed.

The system functions as a secure, domain-specific agent. Unlike general-purpose AI, the AAFCO Virtual Assistant is architected to ensure all responses are grounded in AAFCO-approved materials, including the globally recognized comprehensive list of approved feed ingredients.

Enhancing Decision Intelligence with SWARM Engineering

The platform utilizes SWARM Engineering’s decision intelligence technology, which features secure retrieval frameworks and domain-trained reasoning agents. This structure transforms static regulatory documentation into an interactive support system without replacing human expertise.

“Building on more than 115 years of scientific standards, our organization is embracing an AI-driven approach to transform the complex regulatory landscape,” said Austin Therrell, executive director of AAFCO. “Industry partners, regulators, and manufacturers worldwide can now proactively navigate ingredient definitions, labeling requirements, and safety standards more efficiently.”

Shail Khiyara, CEO of SWARM Engineering, added: “SWARM’s AVA builds on that foundation. It demonstrates that Agentic AI can operate responsibly within a governed regulatory framework, grounding every response in AAFCO-approved standards.”

Subscription Access and Digital Integration

The AAFCO Virtual Assistant is currently accessible to users of the AAFCO Digital Publication Package. This annual subscription bundles the AI tool with the 2026 Official Publication, the Pet Food Labeling Guide, and the Animal Feed Labeling Guide. This digital-first approach is part of a broader effort by the association to safeguard animal and human health through technological advancement.

AAFCO Expansion into Automated Label Evaluation

Following the launch of the assistant, the association is seeking to expand its AI capabilities. The organization recently issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of an AI agent capable of evaluating animal feed labels for compliance with the association model regulations and Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).

This proposed tool will assist in ensuring that marketing claims are substantiated and meet legal standards. Interested parties have until March 19, 2026, to submit their proposals to AAFCO.
