Alpine Green & Van Der Hoeven Commit Historic Agri-Tech Funds to Southern Nuevo León
Two Dutch companies, Alpine Green and Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects, have announced a combined $200 million investment to build what is expected to become the most technologically advanced greenhouse complex in Mexico. The project, unveiled by Nuevo León Governor Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda alongside Peter van Laarschot, Executive Director of Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects, will be located in the municipality of Galeana and represents a level of agri-tech investment the southern part of the state has never previously attracted.
Van der Hoeven, which is a partner company in the Alpine Green venture, confirmed that work will commence with an initial phase valued at $70 million before scaling to the full investment envelope.
Van der Hoeven Technology at the Core of the Facility
The greenhouse complex will rely on advanced illumination technology supplied by Signify, the Dutch lighting manufacturer behind brands including Philips, Philips Hue, Interact, Dynalite, and Color Kinetics. More than 2,000 Signify fixtures will be installed across the facility — the same class of horticultural lighting used to sustain turf conditions in professional football stadiums.
The technology is designed to guarantee consistent freshness and quality across vegetable and leafy green production, with pesticide-free lettuce cited as a primary output. The project will position Nuevo León as a national reference for sustainable agricultural innovation.
“This investment is doubly important because, first, it involves agroindustry, and second, it is going to Galeana, Nuevo León, for technoparks. These companies have the best technology, the best LED lighting, and a whole range of advantages for producing the freshest, pesticide-free lettuce,” said Governor Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda.
Job Creation and Regional Development
The greenhouses are projected to create more than 300 direct employment positions, introducing a new technology and agriculture hub to the south of Nuevo León. Officials described the development as a new growth pole for a region that has historically had limited exposure to large-scale agri-tech investment.
Signify Outlines Further Expansion in the State
On the margins of the same meeting, Signify announced its own expansion intentions in Nuevo León. The company currently operates two manufacturing plants in the state and supports a local workforce of more than 2,000 employees. Representatives discussed new opportunities tied to strategic projects and growth plans already underway, as well as potential areas of collaboration around innovation, sustainability, and industrial development.
