Key Takeaways:

  • Avalon BioEnergy Uruguay, a subsidiary of Avalon Energy Group LLC, is launching Latin America’s first integrated Agriculture-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) biorefinery in Uruguay.
  • The project is supported by Uruguay’s Ministry of Environment and will offer up to an 80% reduction in emissions compared to traditional jet fuels.
  • The biorefinery integrates sustainable agriculture with green hydrogen production, establishing a low-carbon supply chain for SAF.
  • The initiative is part of Avalon’s global strategy to contribute to net-zero carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions.

Avalon BioEnergy Uruguay S.A., a subsidiary of U.S.-based Avalon Energy Group LLC, has announced the launch of its first fully integrated Agriculture-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) biorefinery in Uruguay. This marks a significant milestone for Latin America, as the project, endorsed by the Ministry of Environment and the Government of Uruguay, aims to reduce aviation emissions while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

A Sustainable Energy Solution for Aviation

The SAF biorefinery will contribute to global efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector, offering a potential 80% reduction in emissions compared to fossil fuel-based jet fuels. Avalon BioEnergy’s innovative model integrates a sustainable agricultural strategy by cultivating proprietary non-edible oil seed crops, which serve as a renewable feedstock for SAF production. This approach ensures that energy production does not interfere with food commodity supplies.

Additionally, the biorefinery will incorporate green hydrogen production through solar-powered electrolysis, further establishing a low-carbon supply chain for SAF. The project aligns with global initiatives to address climate change while supporting economic growth through sustainable practices.

Irshad Ahmed, President & CEO of Auris-Avalon Group of Companies, emphasized the significance of the project: “This endorsement from the Uruguayan government is a crucial milestone for the establishment of Uruguay’s first SAF facility. We are honored by the support and excited to position Uruguay as a leader in SAF production. Our aim is to leverage dedicated non-edible oil seed crops to build a sustainable feedstock supply chain contributing to net-zero goals and fostering regional economic growth.”

High-Impact Clean Energy Project

With a projected investment of US$380 million, or 15.5 billion Uruguayan Pesos, the SAF biorefinery has been designated a high-impact clean energy initiative of national interest. The facility will have the capacity to produce 100,000 metric tons of SAF annually, utilizing the Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) process. This cutting-edge technology will enable the efficient conversion of renewable oils into sustainable jet fuel.

In addition, the project will include the development of a 50 MW solar power plant for the production of green hydrogen, a key component in the SAF production process. PRISMECS, a Houston-based EPC company, has been selected to build the solar power and green hydrogen plant. With extensive experience in managing complex energy projects, PRISMECS will provide the engineering expertise necessary to ensure the successful execution of Avalon’s vision for a low-carbon SAF supply chain.

Government Support and Regional Leadership

The Uruguayan government has strongly endorsed the project, recognizing its potential to drive sustainable development and innovation. Honorable Mr. Gerardo Amarilla, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, highlighted the importance of the biorefinery: “Avalon’s SAF biorefinery has the potential to drive sustainable development and innovation in Uruguay. We are committed to supporting initiatives that align with our climate goals and promote clean energy solutions. This project not only reduces our carbon footprint but also strengthens Uruguay’s position as a regional leader in green energy.”

The impact of Avalon BioEnergy’s SAF project extends beyond Uruguay, positioning the country as a model for sustainable aviation fuel production in Latin America. Honorable Mr. Jorge E. Rodríguez de Mello, the Global Union’s Ambassador at the Uruguayan Embassy, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative: “This biorefinery will serve as a model for other countries in the region. Uruguay is committed to fostering innovations that advance environmental sustainability and economic prosperity, and we are excited to see the positive outcomes this project will bring.”
