Bio Natural Solutions Receives Investment from Mercy Corps Ventures
Mercy Corps Ventures has announced an investment in Bio Natural Solutions (BNS), a Peru-based biotechnology company focused on transforming agricultural waste into biological crop protection products. The investment supports BNS’s expansion as farmers face increasing regulatory pressure, climate-driven pest challenges, and rising scrutiny over chemical residues in export markets.
BNS develops biological inputs using fruit peels and seeds that would otherwise go to waste. These inputs are designed to replace synthetic fungicides and petroleum-based waxes in post-harvest applications, helping extend shelf life while reducing chemical residues and environmental impact.
Bio Natural Solutions Advances Circular and Commercially Proven Technology
Unlike many early-stage agricultural biotechnology companies, Bio Natural Solutions has already achieved commercial viability. The company reached breakeven in 2022 and has continued to grow organically, supported primarily by customer revenues and grant funding. According to Mercy Corps Ventures, BNS demonstrates strong unit economics, repeat customer demand, and product–market fit.
The company holds patents in more than a dozen countries and has secured regulatory and organic certifications that allow it to commercialize products in over 10 key global markets, including Peru, Central America, Mexico, Chile, the European Union, the UK, and the United States. Additional approvals in Brazil and Ecuador are expected in 2026.
Supporting Smallholder Farmers Through Export Value Chains
Measurable Impact Beyond Technology
BNS’s customer base consists primarily of produce exporters, many of whom source between 20% and 100% of their supply from smallholder farmers. Through its circular sourcing model, the company purchases agricultural residues from small cooperatives, directly benefiting producers in regions such as Piura and Ica in Peru.
Through its Farmers of the Future program, Bio Natural Solutions also works directly with smallholder farmers via training and technology transfer. Participating farmers have reported an average 40% reduction in post-harvest losses and an 8% increase in income, driven by improved quality and reduced rejection rates in export markets.
“At BNS, we believe the future of global agriculture doesn’t lie in using more agrochemicals, but in transforming waste through biotechnology and circular economy solutions that regenerate both crops and the planet,” said Miguel Malnati, Co-founder and CEO of BNS.
Mercy Corps Ventures stated that the investment reflects confidence in BNS’s ability to combine scalable commercial performance with measurable environmental and social outcomes across global food value chains.
