Bloem Expands Horticultural Lighting Line with Launch of Top Crop

Bloemteknik (t/a Bloem) has announced the release of Top Crop, the latest addition to its LED lighting portfolio for greenhouse cultivation. The new platform is designed specifically for high-wire crops, offering real-time control over light intensity and spectrum to help optimize plant development, energy use, and crop uniformity across each stage of growth.

“With Top Crop, we’re building on the success of our patent-pending adjustable light engines by adding dynamic spectral control,” said Antoine Charvin, Product Manager at Bloemteknik. “Growers can now fine-tune both intensity and light spectrum in real time, helping to guide plant morphology, optimise each growth phase or respond to both seasonal changes and time-of-day conditions.”

Purpose-Built for Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Peppers

Top Crop is engineered to meet the demands of vine crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, which require tailored lighting strategies through vegetative, flowering, and fruiting phases. The system’s multi-channel LED spectrum can be adjusted in real time to respond to plant biology and external environmental conditions.

Early trials of the technology have reported strong outcomes. Kannuksen Kauppapuutarha, a Finnish greenhouse grower, recorded a 43% increase in cucumber yields after implementing Bloem’s lighting system.

System Design and Greenhouse Integration

Top Crop incorporates Bloem’s patent-pending adjustable light engine to improve light penetration and uniformity across vertically growing crops. The system is built with full aluminium casing and a sealed optical lens, offering thermal durability and protection in high-humidity greenhouse environments.

Additional features include:

  • Plug-and-play installation for streamlined setup
  • Remote driver configuration to reduce heat accumulation and extend fixture lifespan
  • Multi-light engine compatibility per external power supply

Bloem’s Advanced Control and Energy Optimization

Top Crop integrates with Wand, Bloem’s wireless lighting control platform. This allows growers to adjust spectrum, intensity, and dimming by zone, as well as implement specific light recipes. The system supports independent far-red control for end-of-day treatments and shade avoidance responses, helping regulate internodal spacing, leaf expansion, and flowering timing.

When paired with PAR sensors, the platform can automatically adjust output to achieve targeted daily light integral (DLI) levels, helping minimize energy waste and align lighting strategies with specific crop needs.
