2024 Wheat Crop Highlights
Cereals Canada has released its annual New Wheat Crop Report, offering domestic and global customers an update on the quality, functionality, and production of Canadian wheat.
“In the 2024-25 crop year, Canada is expected to export 25.4 million tonnes of wheat to over 80 countries, with the quality and protein content that customers expect,” said Dean Dias, Chief Executive Officer at Cereals Canada. “This will make Canada the world’s third-largest exporter of wheat and the top exporter of high-quality, high-protein wheat for the second year in a row.”
Strong Production and Quality
The 2024 season saw nearly 34.3 million tonnes of wheat grown across Canada, benefiting from favorable weather conditions. Key production highlights include:
- A 4% increase in non-durum wheat production.
- An 8% increase in durum wheat production.
- A high proportion of all wheat classes grading No. 2 or better.
Quality and Protein Content by Wheat Class
- CWRS (Canada Western Red Spring): Average protein content, with a very high proportion grading No. 1 or No. 2.
- CWAD (Canada Western Amber Durum): High grades (No. 1 or No. 2) and average to higher-than-average protein content.
- CPSR (Canada Prairie Spring Red): Average protein content, with a high proportion grading No. 1 or No. 2.
- CESRW (Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter): High grades (No. 1 or No. 2) but slightly lower-than-average protein content.
International Outreach and Engagement
The technical data for the 2024 wheat crop will be presented during webinars on November 19 and 20. Following this, a cereals value chain delegation will visit 18 key markets across four international trade and technical missions. These markets accounted for $8.6 billion in Canadian wheat purchases in 2023.
“The New Crop Trade and Technical Missions help strengthen the competitiveness of the Canadian cereal industry,” said Dias. “Our in-market outreach builds relationships, creates advocates for Canadian wheat, and facilitates discussions on market access.”
Preparation of the Report
The 2024 New Wheat Crop Report was developed in collaboration with the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), value chain members, and provincial grower commissions. Analysis included over 115 wheat samples from Western Canada and an assessment of Eastern Canadian winter wheat contributed by the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO).
