DTN Announces AI-Powered Weather Forecasting Enhancements

DTN, the global leader in operational decisioning for energy, agriculture, and weather-driven industries, has announced advancements in weather forecasting through a collaboration with NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The initiative combines DTN’s meteorological expertise, NVIDIA’s AI technology, and AWS’s scalable computing infrastructure.

According to Renny Vandewege, General Manager of Weather and Climate Intelligence at DTN, the partnership represents “a new frontier of operational decisioning for organizations operating in weather-sensitive environments.”


DTN and NVIDIA Earth-2 Integration

At the center of the collaboration is the integration of NVIDIA Earth-2’s AI weather models into the DTN forecasting engine. This approach enhances deep learning-based forecasts, creating faster and more precise insights.

Dion Harris, Senior Director of HPC and AI Infrastructure at NVIDIA, stated that the integration “showcases how Earth-2 digital twin technology can empower experts like DTN to deliver specialized forecasts that help businesses adapt to a changing climate and make better decisions in real time.”


Role of AWS in DTN Forecasting System

AWS supports the initiative by providing scalable infrastructure through Amazon EC2 instances and AWS Batch. Since 2020, AWS has hosted DTN’s global forecasting system, helping reduce latency and increase the frequency of high-resolution forecast generation.

Ian Colle, Director of Advanced Computing and Simulation at AWS, explained that the cloud integration allows DTN and NVIDIA to “run advanced weather models on a unified cloud platform,” enabling faster, more accurate forecasts for businesses and communities.


Industry Impact and Applications

The upgraded DTN forecasting system is expected to benefit multiple industries. Farmers will gain hyper-local weather data to optimize irrigation and harvest schedules, energy managers will anticipate grid stress, and transportation operators can reroute fleets in real time to avoid weather disruptions.

Vandewege added that the collaboration “arrives at a critical time, potentially reducing weather-related economic losses while creating new opportunities for businesses to optimize their operations around more reliable and granular forecasts.”
