Enhancing Vertical Farming: The Taguchi Method Streamlines Plant Growth Optimization

Vertical farming has shown significant potential for revolutionizing agriculture, allowing for more sustainable and efficient food production. However, optimizing the growth of crops in these environments requires a deep understanding of the impact of various environmental factors. A recent experimental study by Farhangi et al. (2023) has made strides in this area, employing the Taguchi method to identify optimal growth conditions for lettuce and basil plants that could result in enhancing vertical farming.

Researchers have saved time and money in designing and conducting experiments on plant growth by using the Taguchi method, a statistical approach to experiments. This method helps investigate multiple environmental factors simultaneously. For example, the study chose 27 treatments. Then, it used the signal-to-noise ratio to predict the best levels of each environmental condition to maximize basil and lettuce growth parameters.

The results showed that most parameters, except EC (electrical conductivity) and relative humidity for specific growth parameters, were interrelated. These findings provide valuable insights for vertical farmers seeking to maximize the growth and yield of their crops.

Confirmation tests were carried out to validate the results using the predicted optimal parameters. As a result, the Taguchi approach proved effective in determining the ideal environmental conditions for plant growth in vertical farms, as evidenced by the low error ratio (1-3%) between the expected and predicted values.

The study by Farhangi et al. showcases the Taguchi method's potential for streamlining crop growth optimization in vertical farms. Vertical farmers can increase their yields by identifying each crop's most influential environmental conditions, making their operations more sustainable and efficient.

As the world continues to face the challenges of climate change and a growing population, innovative approaches like the Taguchi method will play a critical role in shaping the future of agriculture. By enhancing vertical farming, researchers and practitioners can contribute to developing a more resilient and sustainable food system.
