EnviTec Biogas Expands U.S. Operations with Major Renewable Gas Project in South Dakota

EnviTec Biogas, through its U.S. subsidiary, has commissioned its largest anaerobic digestion plant in the United States to date. Located in South Dakota, the facility has been processing over 300,000 gallons of manure per day from more than 9,500 dairy cows since the beginning of the year. The plant is projected to produce 483 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of renewable natural gas (RNG)—equivalent to roughly 177,000 million BTU per year.

This development marks a significant expansion of EnviTec Biogas’ presence in the U.S., where it has been active since 2012.

“This facility marks the fifth of a total of 15 biogas plants we are developing for our client,” said Lars von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc.

EnviTec Biogas Strategic Partnership Supports Growth in Sustainable Energy

Collaboration with SJI Renewable Energy Ventures and Local Suppliers

The new plant is part of a broader portfolio of 15 projects EnviTec Biogas is constructing in partnership with SJI Renewable Energy Ventures, a company focused on clean energy infrastructure. Eight of these sites are located on farms operated by a major U.S. agribusiness.

“This new facility is a true win-win for both business and the environment,” said Timothy Logan, President of EnviTec Biogas Construction LLC. “It converts dairy waste into renewable energy while reducing the carbon footprint of farming.”

Local Manufacturing and Service Infrastructure Key to U.S. Strategy

Partnership with Collins Precast and Local Laboratory Support

In addition to project development, EnviTec Biogas has invested in local manufacturing through a partnership with Collins Precast LLC, enabling the production of concrete tanks approved for use in South Dakota. These tanks are a core part of the facility’s infrastructure.

EnviTec has also signed a multi-year service contract with its client to provide:

  • Scheduled and on-demand technical services
  • 24/7 hotline support
  • Biological monitoring through its Watertown, SD-based lab

“During commissioning, we provided weekly sampling and analysis,” added Logan.

EnviTec Biogas Advances Toward Completing U.S. Portfolio

With five facilities now operational, EnviTec Biogas has delivered one-third of its planned U.S. projects. Three additional sites have completed cold commissioning and are preparing for ramp-up. The company’s first Minnesota-based projects are scheduled to begin operations later this year.

Globally, EnviTec Biogas AG has completed over 700 plants in 18 countries. Its technologies span anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, ammonia stripping, and bio-LNG and bio-LCO₂ production, accommodating feedstocks such as dairy manure and food waste.
