REWE Rooftop Farming Project in Berlin

ECF Farmsystems and REWE Group have broken ground on what is set to become Berlin’s largest urban rooftop farm. Located on Malteserstraße in the Lankwitz district, the project will integrate food production directly above a supermarket, providing year-round regional supply of fresh lettuce.

According to ECF Farmsystems, the rooftop farm will cover 2,760 m² and produce more than 900,000 salad mixes annually. Produce will be harvested on-site and delivered to as many as 700 REWE stores across the capital region.

“Since the first REWE Green Farming store in Wiesbaden, we have further developed our system and made the urban circular economy concrete – with a measurable impact,” the company stated.

Sustainable Features

The Berlin rooftop farm will combine multiple resource-efficient features, including:

  • Use of sunlight, waste heat, and rainwater.
  • Integration into existing logistics systems for short transport routes.
  • A modular timber structure designed to store over 700 tonnes of CO₂.

“Our mission is making cities more resilient, building cycles instead of wasting resources, and using roof areas productively,” ECF Farmsystems said.

Recognition and Future Plans For REWE

Stefan Hörning, Chairman of the Management Board at REWE Ost, emphasized the broader goals of the initiative: “Today we are celebrating the topping-out ceremony for our REWE Green Farming in Berlin-Lankwitz. Together with many partners, we are building the supermarket of the future with Berlin’s largest rooftop farm. From spring 2026, fresh lettuce will grow here for the capital, in the middle of the city.”

The project has already received recognition, winning first place in the “Climate Protection Partner Berlin 2025” competition in the category of Innovative Planning.
