Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM), a global leader in high-purity cellulose, broke ground on its Second Generation (2G) Bioethanol Plant in Tartas, France, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability and green energy. This announcement was officially made on June 15, 2023, emphasizing RYAM’s dedication to the innovative use of biomass in fuel production.
The new plant, strategically located in Tartas, is set to harness second-generation bioethanol technology, further cementing RYAM’s position as an environmentally-conscious industry pioneer. Unlike conventional bioethanol – often criticized for its competition with food production – second-generation bioethanol is produced from lignocellulosic biomass, an abundant non-food resource.
Once operational, the facility will contribute to France’s efforts to meet the European Union’s biofuel blending mandate, which calls for increased usage of biofuels to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. RYAM’s decision to locate its plant in France signifies its belief in the country’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy.
De Lyle Bloomquist, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of RYAM, expressed enthusiasm for the project. He emphasized the company’s pledge to a greener future: “We are thrilled to launch our groundbreaking 2G Bioethanol plant in Tartas. This project aligns with our commitment to drive innovation and sustainability while providing a greener fuel option for the region.”
The Tartas plant will work in synergy with RYAM’s existing high-purity cellulose mill in the area, leveraging the waste products from the mill to produce bioethanol. The plant’s integration with the cellulose mill underlines RYAM’s commitment to a circular economy model, where waste is minimized by being used as raw material in another process.
This venture showcases RYAM’s ongoing dedication to green innovation and demonstrates the potential for industries to shift towards more sustainable operations without compromising efficiency or profitability.
As the company breaks ground in Tartas, RYAM continues strengthening its role as a leading innovator in using renewable resources, setting a high standard for other industry players, and contributing to the global pursuit of clean and sustainable energy.
