10 Winners of the 2023 Zayed Sustainability Prize Honoured

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) presented awards to the winners of the 2023 Zayed Sustainability Prize at a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi. The ceremony, which marked the beginning of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), was attended by numerous dignitaries from the UAE and abroad, including heads of state, ministers, and past winners of the prize.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, which is worth $3 million, is a global award that recognizes and rewards small and medium-sized enterprises, non-profit organizations, and high schools around the world for their innovative solutions in the areas of health, food, energy, and water. Through its 96 former winners, the prize has impacted the lives of more than 378 million people around the world since it was established in 2008.

In his remarks at the ceremony, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted the importance of the prize as a global catalyst for sustainability and humanitarian action. He also emphasized the need for greater international collaboration to mobilize climate action and create sustainable economic and social development opportunities across all nations.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, and it also coincides with the UAE’s preparation to host the 28th session of the Conference of Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Against this backdrop, this year’s awards serve as a reminder of the need for greater international collaboration to mobilize climate action and create sustainable economic and social development opportunities across all nations.

The President also praised the Prize’s Global High Schools category, which empowers young people to play an active role in supporting their communities’ socio-economic development through sustainable practices. He emphasized the need to develop young people into the critical thinkers and sustainability leaders of tomorrow.

The winners included: Brazil’s Associação Expedicionários da Saúde (EDS) in the Health category for their Mobile Hospital Complex that provides specialized medical care for indigenous communities in the Amazon, Ÿnsect from France in the Food category for their work in insect-based protein and natural fertilizers, NeuroTech from Jordan in the Energy category for their solution that brings reliable energy access to refugee camps, and Local Environment Development and Agricultural Research Society (LEDARS) from Bangladesh in the Water category for their integrated water resource management model that solves water scarcity issues in disaster-prone areas.
