EDF Power Solutions Reaches Financial Close on 120 MW JBB Wind Project in Oman

EDF power solutions and partners reached financial close on Oman's 120 MW JBB wind project, with operations expected in Q3 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • EDF Power Solutions, Al Khadra Partners and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) reached financial close on the 120 MW Jaalan Bani Bu Ali (JBB) wind project in Oman.
  • The wind farm will use 16 turbines rated at 7.7 MW each, in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
  • A 20-year power purchase agreement was signed with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company.
  • Commercial operations are expected in the third quarter of 2027, supplying more than 13,500 households.
  • The project is set to avoid over 270,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, EDF’s first wind deal in Oman.

A consortium led by EDF Power Solutions has reached financial close on the 120-megawatt Jaalan Bani Bu Ali wind project in Oman, clearing the way to build one of the country’s next large-scale renewable energy plants. EDF Power Solutions is developing the project with Al Khadra Partners and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE).

EDF Power Solutions Closes Financing on Oman Wind Farm

The financial close follows a 20-year power purchase agreement the partners signed with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, which will buy the electricity the plant produces. Reaching financial close means the consortium has locked in the funding needed to start construction. For EDF Power Solutions, it is the company’s first wind transaction in Oman and adds to its expanding footprint in the Gulf renewable energy market.

“Achieving financial close on the JBB Wind Project is a major milestone for all partners involved and demonstrates the confidence of lenders in both the project and Oman’s renewable energy market,” said Luc Koechlin, Chief Executive Officer, Middle East, at EDF Power Solutions.

Financial close is a key gate for large infrastructure projects. It confirms that lenders and equity partners have committed capital and that the main contracts, including the power purchase agreement and construction deals, are in place. Passing it lets the consortium order equipment and begin work on the ground.

Inside the 120 MW JBB Wind Project

The wind farm will sit in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, about 440 kilometres from the Port of Duqm. It will use 16 turbines, each rated at 7.7 megawatts, for a combined 120 MW of capacity. Commercial operations are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027. Once running, the plant is projected to supply low-carbon electricity to more than 13,500 Omani households and avoid over 270,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

EDF Power Solutions Backs Oman’s Energy Transition

The JBB project supports Oman’s national strategy to diversify its economy and raise the share of renewable sources in its electricity mix. Independent power projects like this one let the government add capacity while private developers handle construction and financing. With funding secured, EDF Power Solutions and its partners will move the site toward its 2027 start.

Under its Oman Vision 2040 plan, the country aims to add renewable capacity and reduce its reliance on gas for power. Wind projects such as JBB complement a growing pipeline of solar plants in Oman. For EDF Power Solutions, the deal deepens its presence in the Gulf, where several governments are tendering large renewable projects to private developers.
