Fresh Inset’s Vidre+™ Active Packaging Shows Promising Results in Postharvest Trials
Fresh Inset has announced that its Vidre+™ Complex active packaging technology is delivering measurable improvements in product freshness across multiple crop categories. Field trials indicate that Vidre+™ extends the shelf life of spinach by up to 10 days and significantly reduces shrinkage in raspberries, offering a value-added solution for postharvest handling.
“Incorporating Vidre+™ can be easily implemented into storage and logistics,” said Krzysztof Czaplicki, Chief Scientific Officer at Fresh Inset. “The technology incorporates freshness-enhancing properties directly into packaging materials and works with the majority of traditional formats, e.g., cardboard box or clamshell.”
How Vidre+™ Works: Active Protection Against Ethylene
Vidre+™ integrates a slow-release formulation of 1-MCP, a compound known to inhibit ethylene perception in plants. Ethylene is a naturally occurring hormone that accelerates ripening and spoilage in fresh produce. By embedding this compound into the packaging, Vidre+™ helps slow down postharvest quality degradation.
This technology is designed to work with a variety of existing packaging types, allowing producers and distributors to enhance product life without needing to overhaul packaging infrastructure.
Commercialization and Regulatory Status of Fresh Inset’s Vidre+™
Vidre+™ is currently registered in Peru, available in the U.S., and being commercialized across Europe through Fresh Inset’s partnership with Janssen PMP. This broader market availability supports its integration into global fresh supply chains seeking to reduce food waste and maintain quality during transportation and retail display.
