Venlo Greenhouse: A New Era in Commercial Growing
The Venlo greenhouse project is the result of years of research and development and a $13 million investment in GrowSpan’s manufacturing facilities and infrastructure. The Dyersville campus, now spanning over 60 acres, has become a hub for innovation in controlled environment agriculture.
“As the only U.S. manufacturer of the Venlo, we have a unique opportunity to expand our reach and provide innovative solutions to both existing and new customers,” said Will Hopkins, Business Development Manager for GrowSpan.
Designed for large-scale commercial operations, the Venlo greenhouse offers:
- Highly efficient climate control systems.
- Superior light diffusion and durability with hot-dipped galvanized steel and 4mm glass.
- 25,000 square feet of growing space divided into three specialized zones.
- A headhouse with 10,000 square feet of production and operational space.
Innovative Features and Advanced Growing Systems By GrowSpan Greenhouse Structures
The Venlo greenhouse incorporates advanced growing technologies to maximize productivity, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Key Greenhouse Features:
✅ 90% natural sunlight transmission through high-quality glass.
✅ Motorized, cable-driven climate screens for precision light management.
✅ Hydronic heating systems, LED lighting, and high-pressure foggers for climate control.
✅ Partitioned growing zones tailored to different crop types.
Inside, the greenhouse is divided into three growing zones:
- Lettuce Zone: Uses a deep water cultivation system with floating rafts.
- Tomato Zone: Features a suspended gutter system with drip irrigation.
- Strawberry Zone: Utilizes a similar gutter cultivation system with leachate collection.
“With glass, the structure allows around 90% of natural sunlight to come through,” said Jena Jepson, Head Grower for GrowSpan. “The taller roof and large open space create a more homogenous growing environment, making it more efficient than traditional greenhouses.”
The attached two-level headhouse provides space for harvesting, processing, mechanical operations, and office space, with a conference room and viewing platform overlooking the greenhouse.
Bringing Dutch Greenhouse Technology to U.S. Growers
The Venlo greenhouse model, originally developed in the Netherlands, is widely used in large-scale commercial agriculture. GrowSpan’s U.S. manufacturing of the Venlo system gives American growers access to proven European technology without relying on international imports.
“For operations needing a structure over 15,000 square feet, the Venlo is an easy choice. It’s the most efficient system available, backed by Dutch technology that sets the industry standard,” said Hopkins.
The greenhouse’s high-tech design allows for lower operating costs, making it an attractive option for commercial growers focused on profitability.
“Our customers look for greenhouse systems that maximize profitability,” said Tania Tomoroga, VP of Sales and Marketing for GrowSpan. “The Venlo structure will allow them to produce large harvests at the lowest cost, giving them a competitive edge in the marketplace.”
Supporting Local Communities and Future Growers
Beyond commercial applications, GrowSpan’s Venlo greenhouse will also benefit local communities in Eastern Iowa. The facility will:
- Supply fresh produce to the region.
- Host educational tours for schools, universities, and industry professionals.
- Offer hands-on learning for new and experienced growers.
“For us, we wanted this greenhouse to be a showcase for cutting-edge growing systems and equipment,” added Jepson. “We focused on industry standards and sustainability to ensure this facility meets the needs of modern agriculture.”
With controlled environment agriculture playing a key role in the future of food production, GrowSpan aims to lead the industry in efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.
