KUBO Joins New Greenhouse Project in Saudi Arabia's Jazan Province
KUBO is contributing to a new large-scale greenhouse horticulture project in the Saudi Arabian desert. Wouter Kuiper and Said El Ouakili traveled to the country last week for the official signing of the contracts, a ceremony attended by several dignitaries including the Dutch ambassador and the Prince of Jazan.
Construction of the project, located in Jazan Province, is scheduled to begin at the end of this year, with a planned total area of 45 hectares.
KUBO Ultra-Clima Technology in Practice
The first new greenhouse will be designed for tomato cultivation and will use KUBO's Ultra-Clima® concept. KUBO will supply the technology and expertise needed to grow crops efficiently under local climate conditions, while its team will also support the cultivation strategy and production optimization. The company is developing the project together with Amtar Al Khair Agricultural Crops Company.
Building on Previous Success
The new project follows an earlier one completed in Saudi Arabia's Hail region, where initial production results exceeded expectations.
“The results confirm that controlled cultivation can be successful, even under challenging conditions,” said Said El Ouakili, Regional Sales Director at KUBO. “Discussions are already under way about the next phases. There is strong confidence in Dutch expertise and technology.”
Experience from earlier projects in Saudi Arabia has also built confidence, demonstrating that advanced greenhouse horticulture technology can support reliable food production in a dry and hot climate.
Supporting Saudi Arabia's Food Production Goals
Saudi Arabia aims to increase its domestic production of fruit and vegetables as part of its national Vision 2030 strategy, which includes producing food efficiently while limiting water and energy use.
“In a region where water is scarce and temperatures are high, control over the growing climate is essential,” said Said El Ouakili. “With the right technology, growers can produce more while using fewer natural resources.”
Local Employment and Knowledge Transfer
The greenhouse will be built by local employees under the supervision of KUBO specialists, an approach intended to support knowledge transfer as well as employment and economic development in the region. KUBO said the project is designed to support food production in Saudi Arabia while strengthening the position of Dutch horticultural expertise in the region, with a focus on sustainable growth and long-term collaboration.
