Key Takeaways
- SmartSolve has introduced PureNil 0, a plastic-free, 100% bio-based, flushable paper-based pouching material, into agricultural applications.
- PureNil 0 became commercially available in January 2026 and has already been used in personal care, home cleaning, and healthcare packaging.
- In agriculture, the material targets pre-measured, single-dose formats for crop protection, fertigation, biologicals, soil amendments, seed products, and consumer lawn and garden items.
- The packaging disperses on contact with water, eliminating scooping, measuring, or empty containers to dispose of.
- SmartSolve CEO Jon Jakubowski said the material gives brands a scalable, commercially available alternative to plastic-based packaging.
SmartSolve Brings Water-Soluble Packaging to Agriculture
SmartSolve, a water-soluble packaging maker based in Bowling Green, Ohio, has introduced PureNil 0, a plastic-free, 100% bio-based, printable, and flushable paper-based pouching material, into a new round of agricultural applications. PureNil 0 became commercially available in January 2026 and has since been adopted in personal care, home cleaning, and healthcare packaging; the company says it has now gained traction in agriculture, spanning crop protection, fertigation, biologicals, soil amendments, seed and planting, and consumer lawn and garden products.
Targeting Pre-Measured, Single-Dose Formats
SmartSolve says agricultural products are increasingly moving toward pre-measured, single-dose formats that are easier to apply consistently and harder to over-apply. PureNil 0 is designed to disperse on contact with water, removing the need for scooping, measuring, or disposing of an empty container. The company points to potential uses including pre-dosed fertilizer sachets, water-dispersible granules and powders for tank mixes, microbial and biostimulant blends, soil amendment packs, and pre-portioned seed products, positioning the material for organic and regenerative programs as well as conventional crop protection and fertilizer brands.
SmartSolve on the Agriculture Push
“Brands now have a viable, scalable, and commercially available alternative that’s fully bio-based, plastic-free, and water-soluble,” said Jon Jakubowski, CEO of SmartSolve. “This is the kind of innovation that will help our partners lead, versus just keep up, in the sustainable packaging movement.” SmartSolve said the packaging is compatible with existing packaging equipment and is intended to protect products until use without leaving residue behind.
