Early Planting Boosts Soybean Yields, Purdue Research Shows
Field experiments conducted during 2024 and 2025 at three Purdue Agricultural Centers in Indiana found that early-planted soybean fields nearly always produced higher yields than mid- or late-planted fields, according to research published in the journal Weed Technology. The trials ran at sites near Wanatah, LaFayette and Butlerville, representing Indiana's northern, central and southern growing regions.

“An early planting date resulted in a greater yield than for mid-late and late planting dates at all site-years, except in SEPAC 2024,” said Estevan G. Cason, Graduate Research Assistant in Purdue University's Department of Botany and Plant Pathology and the study's corresponding author. “In that site-year, drastically lower temperatures after planting caused a 35% stand reduction in early-planted soybean compared with late planting, resulting in a 15% yield reduction.”
Early planting correlated with thinner soybean stands (13 to 23%) and slightly more herbicide-related crop injury (5 to 10%) than later planting dates, but the researchers found the inclusion of residual herbicides, at full or reduced rates, did not cause yield reductions compared with programs without them.
A Tougher Weed Control Picture
The study also found that postemergence weed control was more challenging at early planting dates, since earlier planting led to higher weed density at the time of application. Early planting resulted in 2.5-, 1.9-, and 2.4-fold increases in common lambsquarters, giant ragweed and waterhemp density compared with late planting, which the researchers say could increase selection pressure for herbicide-resistant weeds over time.
