Westland Municipality Partners With Dutch Greenhouse Delta

Municipality of Westland Partners with Dutch Greenhouse Delta

A collaboration pact is signed between the Dutch Greenhouse Delta and the Municipality of Westland. Only the port of Rotterdam surpasses the 20–25 billion euros in annual turnover that the horticulture industry generates. Dutch Greenhouse Delta (DGD) is a partnership between (applied) science, business, and the government. Currently, DGD partners with more than twenty prestigious businesses, the majority of which have their roots in the Westland area. The cluster offers all the knowledge required to cultivate sustainable crops locally, from seed businesses to technological firms specialized in greenhouses, temperature control, screens, and irrigation.

According to Joep van den Bosch, a member of the DGD Executive Board, “the relationship with Municipality of Westland is of substantial added value to help to the accomplishment of our aims.” As per the Dutch Greenhouse Delta’s press release, only the port of Rotterdam surpasses the 20–25 billion euros in annual turnover that the horticulture industry generates. Not only does the town of Westland provide the ripe tomato, but also the seed that has not yet sprouted. Here, cutting-edge innovation, sustainability, and a focus on well-being come together. Cultivation is more effective than everywhere else on the globe.

Dutch Greenhouse Delta (DGD) is a collaboration of over 20 leading companies, most of which have their roots in the Westland region. From seed companies, biological control, and growing medium to technology companies specializing in greenhouses, climate control, screens, and irrigation; the cluster presents all the expertise needed to grow sustainable crops locally. The key to success is the Dutch cooperation between government, industry and (applied) science (triple helix).

“The inventions from the Dutch greenhouse horticulture cluster are essential for the world to be able to feed the expanding global population without endangering the climate,” according to Bouke Arends, mayor of the Municipality of Westland. “This is acknowledged on a global scale. It should come as no surprise that the municipality of Westland hosts a large number of international delegations each year who come to learn how to grow their own food. Companies engaged in greenhouse horticulture are widespread, which is not unexpected.”
