CellX, a Shanghai-based synthetic biology technology company, has recently secured tens of millions of yuan in a new A+ financing round. This fundraising follows their A-round financing of nearly 100 million yuan in the first half of 2022.
The funds will be used primarily for industrialization promotion, including constructing a kiloliter-ton pilot plant, purchasing critical equipment, and advancing the industrialization of technology research and development. This move introduces several strategic investors to the company.
CellX is dedicated to developing new protein products centered on cell-cultured meat. This green and low-carbon platform technology uses animal and microbial cells to produce new proteins and related products. It aims to offer a more efficient and resource-sustainable alternative to traditional animal husbandry and other production methods.
After nearly three years of independent research and development, CellX has developed four powerful technology platforms: cell lines, culture medium, new technology, and innovative products. The company plans to complete China’s first 1,000-ton cell-cultured meat pilot test within the year.
The company has successfully developed over ten immortalized cell lines of various categories, with the most advanced pipeline in the pilot test stage. The company has made great strides in culture efficiency and cost by developing low-cost serum-free media and process optimization.
The CellX pilot plant is being built in partnership with the Tofflon Group. It is equipped with multiple thousands of liters of bioreactors and uses CellX’s independently developed suspension culture technology and serum-free medium for cell-cultured meat production.
Co-founder and CEO of CellX, Mr. Yang Ziliang, stated that cell-cultured meat is destined to become a commodity with competitive prices and stable production. Completing the 1,000-liter pilot plant marks the start of the ton-scale pilot tests for CellX and China’s cell-cultured meat industry.
In addition to technological advancements, CellX is continuously strengthening industrial linkages to promote the global development of the cell-cultured meat industry. CellX has been part of international collaborations and received numerous accolades, including being selected as a finalist in the XPRIZE competition and being named one of China’s most socially influential start-up companies.
CellX maintains a vision of sustainable and empathetic development as the long-term trend of human social progress and sees cell-cultured meat as a new sustainable source of high-quality protein for future generations. The company remains committed to its core goal of reducing production costs and accelerating industrialization.
