Key Takeaways
- Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has completed its eighth dairy RNG production facility, located at East Valley Cattle in Jerome, Idaho, described as one of the largest single-site dairy and RNG facilities in North America.
- The East Valley facility is home to over 35,000 cows and operates six anaerobic digesters capable of processing more than 5 million gallons of manure per day, using municipality-scale wastewater treatment and advanced manure separation technology.
- RNG produced at the facility has received EPA approval to generate Renewable Identification Numbers under the Renewable Fuel Standard program, and CARB approval to generate California LCFS credits.
- The project is financed through CE bp Renew Co, a joint venture between Clean Energy and bp, and recognized its first revenue in Q1 2026.
- RNG from dairy waste can achieve a negative carbon-intensity score, as it reduces methane emissions at the source and replaces fossil natural gas in transportation fleets nationwide.
Clean Energy Fuels Completes Dairy RNG Facility at East Valley Cattle in Idaho
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) has completed its eighth dairy renewable natural gas production facility at East Valley Cattle in Jerome, Idaho, a dairy operation housing more than 35,000 cows. The company describes it as one of the largest single-site dairy and RNG facilities in North America. East Valley Cattle has begun injecting negative carbon-intensity RNG into the interstate pipeline, where it will be used as clean transportation fuel by fleets across the country.
The facility processes more than 5 million gallons of manure per day using a municipality-scale wastewater treatment system combined with advanced manure separation technology. Six anaerobic digesters capture methane from cow manure before it can enter the atmosphere, converting it into pipeline-quality RNG. Processing byproducts are reused on-site, providing livestock bedding and crop fertilizer.
“This is probably the most ambitious project we've taken on — the scale, the technology, and the integration of systems are unmatched and quite frankly, extremely impressive,” said Will Flanagan, Vice President of Strategic Development at Clean Energy. “We're capturing methane, cleaning it up and injecting it on-site while replacing natural gas that would have been of fossil origin. It's a double offset renewable energy, and we are proud to be a part of it.”
EPA and CARB Approvals Unlock Revenue Streams in Q1 2026
The East Valley project recognized its first revenue in Q1 2026, following EPA approval to generate Renewable Identification Numbers under the Renewable Fuel Standard program and California Air Resources Board approval to generate LCFS credits. The project is financed through CE bp Renew Co, a joint venture between Clean Energy Fuels and bp.
Agriculture accounts for approximately 10% of US greenhouse gas emissions, according to the EPA, while transportation contributes a further 28%. By capturing methane from farm waste and converting it to transportation fuel, dairy RNG can achieve a negative carbon-intensity score — one of the few fuel pathways that reduces net emissions both at the source and at the vehicle.
