Lypid Launches Plant-Based Pork Belly in the US and Taiwan Markets

In a move aimed at providing more diverse alternatives in the food sector, Lypid, a US-based food tech company, has introduced Lypid Pork Belly, touted as the world’s first plant-based pork belly product. The new product is slated to hit the United States and Taiwan markets starting in April 2023.

Lypid Pork Belly has been developed using 100% plant-based ingredients and Lypid’s patented PhytoFat™ vegan fat. According to the company, this combination results in a product with a texture and taste similar to traditional pork belly. In addition, the plant-based pork belly is reportedly protein-rich and free from antibiotics and cholesterol. The company also claims that compared to traditional pork bacon, it contains 85% less saturated fat, 39% fewer calories, and 69% less sodium.

The new product is designed to be versatile and suitable for various cooking methods, including sautéing, frying, and baking. “Our combination of PhytoFat™ and a unique fibrous protein alternative has allowed us to recreate the experience of pork belly,” said Dr. Michelle Lee, Lypid’s Co-founder, and CTO.

Lypid plans to partner with innovative food service chains in the US and Asia as part of its distribution strategy. In line with this, two restaurant partners, BaganHood plant-based bistro and 23 Public craft bar, will serve exclusive Lypid Pork Belly dishes in their restaurants in the US and Taiwan.

Last year, Lypid successfully launched PhytoFat™, a plant-based burger patty product, in collaboration with Louisa Coffee, Taiwan’s largest coffeehouse company. This product reportedly won first place in the 2023 “Ingredient Innovation” category at the FoodBev Media’s World Food Innovation Awards.

Pork is the most consumed meat worldwide, and its production contributes to environmental issues. By introducing a plant-based alternative to pork belly, Lypid is positioning itself to offer a broader range of meat substitutes, aiming to provide consumers with more sustainable, flavorful, and potentially healthier dietary options.
