NaturalShrimp, Inc. has announced the commencement of a prawn farm wastewater treatment trial in Mackay, Australia. The problem is being conducted with the support of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the Australian Prawn Farmers Association. The project aims to evaluate the performance of NaturalShrimp’s patented electrocoagulation technology for coagulating microalgae and reducing total nitrogen in wastewater.
According to Tom Untermeyer, who serves as the Chief Technology Officer at NaturalShrimp, the company is enthusiastic about exploring the potential of using EC technology with prawns in the new trial program. He highlighted that the program is not only a solution but also an opportunity to evaluate new sensors and remote access capabilities in a realistic outdoor setting, which will help develop the next generation of EC systems. Mr. Untermeyer expressed confidence that the trial’s success will result in licensing opportunities for their technology in treating aquaculture wastewater worldwide. The company looks forward to releasing the trial results in the coming months.
The trial is carried out by Nautilus Collaboration, Natural Aquatic Systems, and Fresh By Design. The EC technology utilized in the problem has been designed to remove ammonia and nitrites while producing water chemistry that benefits the receiving ecosystem. The project aims to assess the feasibility of the technology in the prawn farming industry and to determine commercialization pathways.
